11 Ways To Save Your Garden From Heavy Rain

heavy rain on garden

After the warmer, drier months, our gardens welcome the refreshing rain. They also love it. But strong winds and rain can be dangerous and undo all of the hard work we have done in the spring and summer to fortify our borders.

To keep your garden safe before, during, and after a downpour, follow these simple tips and suggestions.

Before the rain storm…

1.) Cut off any damaged limbs and shoots.

To make your plants as streamlined as possible and less likely to break and tangle, trim away any dead shoots and limbs before a rainstorm.

2.) Give taller plants some support (physically, not mentally)

Taller, less stable plants may be challenged by heavy rain, especially when accompanied by strong gusts. Gently connect the plant to a wooden or metal structure that has been pushed into the ground. By doing this, you’ll shield it from harm and keep it from breaking.

3.) Check draining areas are clear

Make sure there is enough drainage to prevent water from pooling anywhere in your garden and possibly drowning the neighboring plants. Above all, ensure that there is suitable drainage that slopes away from that garden and that it is not obstructed.

During the storm…

4.) Cover delicate plants and seedlings

If the rain is heavy and persistent, cover young and delicate plants, such as herbs and vegetables, with a waterproof covering like tarpaulin. To guarantee proper drainage away from nearby flora, make sure the covering is sloped in the right way. Cover seedlings with a cloche for extra protection from bad weather and bugs.

After the rain storm…

5.) Check your roots

Make sure there are no exposed roots as a result of soil erosion after the rain has stopped. Before they dry up and run the risk of damaging the plant, cover them with dirt or compost.

6.) Check pots and planters for damage or excess water

If there is a problem with the drainage, these can easily flood. Examine pots and planters prior to, during, and following rain, and cover if required.

7.) Remove any slugs or snails from the area

Slugs and snails love moist environments. Take heed of our advice on how to get rid of slugs naturally.

Additionally, keep in mind that your garden generally enjoys rain. In reality, some plant species will thrive, and we can take care of some planting and weeding problems because of the moist soil conditions.

8.) Remove weeds easily by hand

You have a far higher chance of retrieving the entire root without it breaking or cracking because of the damp soil.

9.) Pick your rain-soaked lettuce

After a decent shower, it will be soft and delicious.

10.) Make the best of your mint

After a rainy day, mint, which prefers damp weather, makes a delicious mint tea.
